For a 56Kbps modem...a good connection will give you 49Kbps
ADSL start at 256Kbps (kilo byte per second)
At 49Kbps... it will take you 5 minutes to download 1Mb
At 256Kbps...it should be 1 minute...but it is more likely to be 2.
The bandwidth is always slower than what they advertise. The ISPs are cheating us.
Also the upload rate is slower.
33Kbps for dialup
64Kbps for ADSL 256

Everytime you pull up a webpage, you make a processor on the server work. The harder it works, the sooner it will wear out.
So they give you so much, and if you go over, then you pay more.
not only does it wear it out faster, but it creates a load, and if alot of people are creating a load, it slows everyone down.
So if the webpage is 100K and they give you 1MB of bandwith, you can visit 10 pages like that, then they cut you off, or charge more.

Example
A V.90 modem supports a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 56 Kbps. Fast Ethernet supports a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 100 Mbps.

It also has become an expression meaning how much you can handle. Like if I say I don't have enough bandwidth to handle all these courses at one time. You are saying that it's too much for you.
