Until he's older and changing from puppy coat to adult coat, a thorough grooming with a good pin brush once a week is plenty. Teach him to lie on his side, and be sure you're brushing down to the skin. If he gets mats, gently tease them out with a slicker. Don't be bathing him more than once a month, especially in the winter or you'll dry out his skin and coat too much. Give him about 1 teaspoon of veg. oil daily on his food to keep his coat and skin in good condition.

Brush him every day. You shouldn't bathe him yourself if he's matted - the soap may not wash out well. He will have to be groomed every two months and you can clip the hair around his butt with scissors. The groomer is necessary not only for the haircut, but his eyes, ears and his anal glands will have to be emptied every so often.
You can clean his rear with baby wipes - for big messes, there is a skin cleanser made by Smith & Nephew, comes in a clear pump bottle that is used to clean hospital and nursing home patients who are incontinent. It's very gentle.
Get instructions from your vet on taking care of his teeth; Maltese tend to have problems with their teeth and that can eventually lead to problems with the heart.

he should be brushed every day and bathed about every 2 to 4 weeks. Some people bathe them one a week but sometimes bathing them too often can cause skin problems. As for a full grooming with a hair cut, that should be done about every 5 to 6 weeks unless your letting his hair grow long.

They need to be combed/brushed daily by you. I have mine groomed every five weeks. A lot depends on how you want him to look too. If you keep him in a puppy cut or you want him longer. There is so much you can do with their fur.
I have never seen fur like a Maltese before. As your pup gets older the fur changes too. It is quite interesting, actually.
I bathe mine whenever they get dirty. You must always comb them out and blow them dry on the "warm" setting of your blow dryer. Never allow him to dry by himself. It is not good for their fur.
Comb and brush while you are drying. They get used to it.
My baby gets a dirty butt. His brother never did, but he does. He
knows when it is dirty and lets me know. I put him in the bathroom sink and he actually holds his butt up for me to wash it.
They have to like getting groomed. So teach him now.......
