The usual answer is to write about a subject that you know. If you are writing a mystery, then check out your facts, about various things that you will mention in your book. Try and use a location for the background of the story, which you are familiar with. Something like Robert Parker, when he wrote the "Spencer" series, he used Boston for a background. He lives in Cambridge, which is just across the river from Boston.
