I want to buy a LCD HDTV but worry I'll not be able to watch all of our family's tapes.

If you have a VCR you can watch your tapes on all HDTVs. Any tv with an input for audio/video will work.

Sure you can, but don't expect great picture quality.Your HD display resolution can be 1366x768.The best output your VCR tapes can send out is only 481 interlaced.
DVD players show 480 progressive.High Definition is 1080 interlaced

You can watch it, but it will look really bad on any HDTV compared to a SDTV.
