NO DANG BLASPHEMOUS ANSWERS FROM DANG ATHEISTS (unless you're an atheist who leaves baskets of food on the doorsteps of poor people in the dead of night, and runs away before anyone can see that you're the one who shared the love.)

It's from a Bible verse. Jesus said in Matthew chapter 6:

Therefore when thou doest [thine] alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:

MITTENS!!!! I love it.

Yes, I realize by answering this in the first person, one would be violating the rule of not letting the left hand know what the right hand doeth.

What I'm looking for is Play it Forward stories, featuring unnamed heroes.

Munkydogg. Nooooooooooooooo...that is NOT the longest answer ever given. Have you read my second answer to SHONUFF BAPTIST? Yes I read your whole answer and you make some very good points. I'm GLAD that companies do things like "gift matching" drives to charities.

But Jesus wasn't condemning this sort of thing Munkydog. He said that such activities would be rewarded on EARTH. Rewards in heaven are given for activities that are done PURELY for the love of God.

Now, I can imagine a situation where a person, believing he is doing God's will, goes the extra dozen miles promoting his company's match-gift-to-charity program. He won't constantly tell others that he's putting in a lot of overtime to make the program known. Love motivates him, not the approval of man. Does God approve?
There is nothing in Mt 6 to indicate that he doesn't.

God took note of Cornelius' charitable works and prayers (before he was a Christian, by the way.) It all has to do with the heart, murkydogg.

When we know that we are utter nothingness, we realize that we have not done anything, but God perfectly does all things through us and through other creatures as well.
When we think we are something great, we boastfully claim to be authors of all good things and blasphemously blame God for all bad things; although we don't have true knowledge to distinguish good from bad, right from wrong, true from false.

Really shouldn't answer these question as they always infuriate me but i've got a spare half hour so what the hey.
Should you really stop one hand from knowing what the other is doing?
The quote is obviously warning against false pride for good deeds. No problem with that but pride in good deeds is not always wrong.
If you donate to charity -say to one of those people outside a supermarket where they give you a sticker - are you saying to wear that sticker is wrong? Surely the main purpose of the sticker is to promote the charity therfore increasing awareness and promoting donations.
If a compantygives to charity and then advertises the fact is this just a public relations ploy or might it influence other companies to do the same thing? If it is just a marketting ploy is this even necessarily wrong? Do the ends justify the means? Is this use of playing one company off against the other to the benefit of a good cause immoral? Just something to think about as many people follow blindly the teachings of the bible without questioning them as to do so can be seen as un-christian.

P.S. Is this the longest answer ever submitted on here? Does it make any sense? is this what you were tryind to get at? Are you really still reading this? Have you nothing better to do? Ok I'll shut up now PHEW!!!

Oh yeah i,m a dang aetheist to boot!

So you know the answer: keeping a low profile. This insures you give alms and the such strictly for the sake of it, not for tax cuts, election campaigns, the pride of being the most charitable on the planet (or in the parish, whatever), or anything like that.

When reading the question, I was thinking to myself that it was on of those questions where people take a verse, read it literally, and turn it into a YA puzzle meant to prove the Bible makes no sense. (To them it doesn't, indeed.)

But thankfully you know what poetic, metaphoric language is.

It is, I believe, a metaphore for the "Body of Christ". If I'm part of the left hand and I'm giving to someone in the right hand...not to toot my own horn and be prideful and self righteous and brag at what a wonderful person I am.

Contract Parkinson's Disease or another neuro-degenerative condition. Alternatively, you could suffer major brain injury. Come to think of it, just drop a couple of tabs of Acid. That should do the trick!!!!

My right hand found out that I was cheating on it with my left hand. Needless to say, it racked me. I don't cheat anymore.

I think it means not to let people know what you are doing. If you are giving alms you do not have to brag about. I hope that helps

The human brain is divided into two hemispheres. It is related to an ancient form of Judeo Christian meditation.
