A dog that gets fixed before they are 18 months are 100% less likely to get several different forms of Cancer. This is probably why the vet told you to let the female breed during her first heat, so you can have her fixed by the time she is 18 months old.
If you have ever watched your dog die of cancer, you would definitely want to do everything in your power to avoid letting any other dog go through it.

Please wait until the female is at least a year old. She herself is still a puppy. The AKC only allows only five litters per dam. If the breeding is done correctly then the female should be having her last registered litter by the time she is 4. I have an AKC Boston, and she almost 3, and she is healthy.
The infection or disease that the vet is speaking of is Pyometra. Pyometra is a very severe infection of the uterus and is life threatening. A female dog can come down with Pyometra at any age, but as long as the female is spayed she will not get this. The infection can occur whether the female is bred or not. She can not catch this virus from the male.
Now Chihuahua puppies have large heads and the litter might have to be delivered by C-section. They also have a soft spot on their heads so just be careful with the little guys. (I also have a male Chihuahua named Taco)
Good luck with your mating.

You never want to breed a female of any kind at the first heat. It is best to wait until they are 18 mo to 2 yr before breeding them the first time. They should be bred no more than once a year and not after age 6, so no, you will not get many litters from a chihuahua. Most chihuahuas have litters of 2-4 dogs. If you plan to breed for the money, forget it. Make sure you have enough money set aside for midnight emergency c-section at the emergency clinic. This will probably costs you into the thousands according to where you live. You stand to lose the pups or the mom, or the mom and pups. Read everything you can about raising pups before you even think about breeding.
I have been raising chihuahuas for over 8 yrs and believe me I do not make any money on them. I breed for the love of the Chihuahua.
Notice my spelling of Chihuahua. It is the correct spelling.

It's a good idea to spay a dog before they come into to heat, however, your vet says you need to breed her her first time? This is crap because spaying after she has heat and pups isn't really going to protect against breast cancer, etc... It's pretty senseless.
And don't ever ever breed a small dog there first heat. They are too small and aren't fully developed.
Sorry getting her pregnant her first heat is a risk. Also, all chihuahua's are prone to illness etc and spaying can help but mostly only if she's spayed before her first heat cycle. Sorry but unless your dog has some illness that only the vet knows about, then he's wrong...
Chihuahua's usually have a difficult time having pups. If they are breed their first time, then there bones are not fully developed. Another thing, chihuahua's have a large head when babies and if the pelvic bone isn't fully developed then there is no way her babies will be born. I got a chihuahua from this lady who had bred her since six mo. and it stunted her growth. Her pelvic bone stopped growing and she isn't able to have a litter on her own. Every one she's had have had to be pulled or by 'C section. And most times even the ones that have waited have to be done because chihuahua's are so frail and have large headed pups.
Good luck with breeding, and don't forget to wait. It'll be better on her.

You do NOT ever breed ANY dog that young esecially a toy breed!!! This is down right dangerous. No dog should be bred younger then 2. It sounds like this dog should NOT be bred at all. Breeding toy breeds is especially difficult & risky.A Lot can go wrong. They are very prone to emergency c-sections, stillbirths, weak puppies, mastitis as well as other problems.
I would recommend having the male neutered (it will eliminate testicular cancer & dramaticly reduce prostrate cancers & infections and anal fistulas) and the female spayed (it will eliminate reproductive cancers and a very serious often fatal uterine infection called pyometria and it will dramaticly reduce the risk of mammary cancer ).
There is a lot involved with breeding, pedigrees, health tests (not just simple vet exams), evaluations to meet breed standard, temperament tests,,,

Either you've gotten it wrong, or your vet is an idiot.
Females should not be bred before the age of two years. Breeding her on her first heat would be like a 12 year old girl having a baby.
Females that are spayed before their first season are considerably less likely to develop breast cancer. You also won't have to worry about mastitis or pyometra.
