Look at a simple case. The area of a rectangle is A = L X W. Both L and W are independent variables. They can vary all over the map. On the other hand, A is a dependent variable. It does not vary on its own, but DEPENDS on L and W - as they vary, it varies.

an independent variable is the one that you can manipulate. a dependent variable depends on the independent variable. for example, the amount of blood glucose may be an independent variable and your diabetes status would be a dependent variable.
