Just give him a nice picture frame full of pics of the both of you. Make it with love and maybe attach a poem or narrative about your love for him. He'll be sure to love it.

You should make the night very romantic! No money? FINE! What you do is make him a special dinner..it could be anything as long as you put your all into it! Then run him a nice warm bath with soothing bubbles, get in with him, give him a sensual massage. And then make love to him like you never did before!

...the fact that you feel badly will show and he will love you for it. don't worry about it. if the relationship works you can make it up to him, if not you saved yourself some hard earned $$. take him for a nice dinner after a few paychecks...make a date now and let that be his present. also make a warm fire, some dinner, and treat him like a king for an evening. what more could a guy want for christmas??

Give him a series of tickets--explain that in lieu of store-bought presents (and due to your new job status), you are giving him some tickets.
On each one print some gift or prize that he can redeem the ticket for: Foot massage. a 3 hour picnic on a lovely Saturday afternoon at the park in the spring, breakfast in bed, one day of dog walking ...you get the picture...

Hey Sweetie, I've been there and done that. Give him little IOU's. One could be for a movie , a home cooked meal, a car wash and things like that. It can be after you get paid. Try making him something homemade, or inexpensive but sentimental.
For the inexpensive but sentimental aspect, my mom always makes sure to set out a bowl of Hershey's kisses with a note saying "Love Mrs. Clause" for my uncle because his mother always used to do that, and she is now deceased. It's not much, but it really brightens his day.
