Not all children start speaking at the same time. The point of onset for certain milestones in childhood are just standards, not measurements by which every child should be assessed. Some children hit certain milestones early, others late. At one year, not talking isn't something to worry about, a two or three, definitely is.

My first daughter didn't speak clear and properly until she was 3 and she had nothing wrong with her and my 2nd was 2yrs. As long as she is babbling its ok for now. She is still a baby, all she really should be saying is Mama and Baba or Dada, anything else is bonus. Some kids speak in full sentances by 18 months, some don't have an understandable vocabulary until much later. Only her doctor will know whats best. She is too young for any worry right now, if by 2 years old, she doesn't have at least a limited vocabulary then she should be evaluated, until then, don't worry.

At one years old they should just be so called babbling I guess you could call it. I don't think that I have ever heard of a child talking at the age of one. They are starting to say things like mama or babba. I work with infants and at one they are starting to say a few words but that is about it. But if he is worried then he should take her to a pediatrician to check her hearing etc. But I would agree that talking to her more or reading to her may help with this. She also could just be a late bloomer because my cousin didn't start talking until he was around 18 months. So I think it also depends on the child.

My daughter had a similar situation. I took her to our pediatrician and he told us an average one year old says 5-6 words. If you know the little girl can hear you and seems to understand you, and she responds in a different way, other that vocally, she is just not ready to talk. Children all develop differently. I have another little girl who spoke full sentences by the time she was one. They are all different. However if the little girl doesn't seem to hear or respond at all. I suggest taking her to a pediatrician.

By two and a half a child should be putting two words together. So at 1 if she is not speaking, there is no worry and you shouldn't push the child nor criticize your nephew because of this.
If you want to help, talk to the child, ask her questions. She opens her mouth for a bite of food, say "Bite" and repeat. Or you are giving her applesauce, say "apple... apple" and any attepmt at it should be praised. Also, encourage animal noises, like ask her what does a puppy do? and see if she can do "woof, woof" although they are noises it is speech, and it is a really good baby step twards "Dog". Just say actions, like "walk", "eat", "go Bye-Bye". before you know it she will be talking in sentences!

I took a childhood development class. Some children begin to talk earlier than others. If I remember correctly, Einstein himself began to speak at a very late age. The only way you can help is to obviously talk with them. You could even show them items, and while showing repeat the word.
Good luck!

My daughter (now 7) didn't really start speaking until she was 3. My mom thought she was mentally challenged or something. She even tried to have me get her tested, but I enrolled her into preschool instead. My daughter said little things or words every now and then which is why I believed she just didn't want to talk.
When she went to our local Head Start preschool she really opened up. Now we can't get her to be quiet. Lol. My advise would be to wait it out and don't get worried about it until she's older.

There is nothing wrong. She is one year old. There is nothing to do. Just continue to let her be a happy baby! If she is not speaking by age 2, then I'd worry!

It is not unusual for a one-year-old not to be speaking yet. There is nothing wrong. However, you can help a child by speaking to her throughout the day, reading to her, naming objects she points to , etc.

My daughter didn't speak until about 1.5 years old and then, not as clearly as expected. I was told, when she was four, that she had 'a lazy tongue'....whatever that was. But the speech pathologists were right about one thing, when she started, she got clearer and clearer.... from then on, girl-talk was everywhere!
