I would say, "Thank you, but I don't celebrate this holiday. I appreciate that you thought of me, but I cannot accept this."

There is a chance they will be offended. However, I have had the experience that because they loved you enough to get the gift in the first place, they will love you enough to respect your feelings on the matter.

Say "Thank you". If it bothers you that they gave you a present or a card you can look for a good opportunity to throw out there that you don't celebrate Christmas. For example, if they ask you what you are doing for Christmas, you can tell them that you are just enjoying the day off and that you don't celebrate Christmas. I think it would be rude and unecessary though to not accept the gift or send the card back, but that's your call.

simply thank them for the gift, and tell them happy holidays. also, if their a friend they should understand why you dont celebrate Christmas. but just because you dont celebrate doesnt mean someone else cant, and giving is a way to celebrate!

The same way you would respond to someone who gave you a gift on April 13th.

Thank you.

You are responding to the giving not the reason.

How about just receiving it as "a gift" (not necessarily a Christmas gift)?

Just say "Thank you" and let it go at that. After all it's the thought that counts. And they are just expressing a fondness for you.
