It sounds like the barrel of your iron is too big.
It depends on the length of your hair AND what type of curls you want for how big your barrel should be. It your hair is pretty long and you want a lot of curls (like it sounds like you do) you should use a barrel thats about 3/4 of an inch.
Dont use anything bigger than an inch.
Use a styling gel through your hair when it is wet before you let it air dry or blow dry. Whatever you do dont let your wet hair touch the iron. So no hairspray or gel right before you put it on because that completely fries and damages your hair. After you make the curl then you can cover it in hairspray if you need to.
Good Luck!

I would use a spray geared towards heat styling on your hair first to protect your hair from damage. Then, as you curl your hair, loop the center section around the curling iron first, then slowly twist the rest around so all lengths of each strand have direct contact with the barrell of the curling iron. Most people start curling at the end and wrap up. That can cause the heat to be concentrated on the ends and cause the most curl to happen there.
Like I said...start curling in the middle of the strand and work down.
Take the curling iron out of each curl slowly and hold the curl in each place for a few seconds right after you take the curling iron out. This will help set the curl.
Also, check to make sure your curling iron is hot. I recommend a CHI curling iron as it makes the job very quick and locks if the curl.

There could be a couple of reasons. One, your hair is all one length. Two, your hair is very long and one length. Three your curling it wrong.
Place the curling iron midway between the ends of your hair and your scalp. Clip onto hair, make two revolutions with the iron. Open the iron slide it down the shaft and continue doing this til the section is curled. It's the Marcel method of curling.
If your not getting it your stylist can show you. And remember less is more. Don't try curling a bunch of hair at once. Take small sections. Good luck.

my hair is like this too. i use a spiral curling iron. also having my hair cut in short layers also made it a lot easier.
my hair isn't very thick, but there is a lot of hair, and so the curls still aren't very small, but they're curlier than "wavy" hair.
if your hair is really thin than you probably won't need the layers. and the curls will turn out smaller.
also use a ceramic curling iron, they are hotter, cause less damage, and heat more evenly

you should take smaller sections and lightly mist with hair spray. then pull tightly when you roll it and feel your hair while it is on the curling iron. it should be warm. you might not be leaving your hair on it long enough and the heat is not penetrating so therefore the ends are the only thing that curls.

soemtimes its the curling iron.. if your not warming up enough. if you are sometimes it might be your hair thats the problem. I'd try using Tresemme "european thickening mousse'' it works for me and i have way straight hair that wont curl for the life of me... but anyways i'd try using some kind of mousse or gel. good luck!!!!!ps. if nothing works..wavy curls are in too!!!! ;) :)p.s ive talked to ssstlylists and if you hear a sizzling sound when your curling its ok! its not your hair thats burnig... its the product! thats ok!!

Take half inch sections at a time, saturate the strand in hairspray, hit it with the curling iron and it should come out crispy, then you can break it up with a little pomade!!!give it a shot.

You're either not pulling it tight enough when winding it around or you're not leaving it in long enough so it's only curling the thinner parts of your hair.

the iron might not be hot enough, or else your not pulling your hair tight enough around it
