My female Pomeranian seems to be panting more than usual lately. She is about a year and a half, and has not been spayed yet, but she has not come in contact with any male dogs. Many times she just lays down and pants, and she constantly does it. She has been eating, drinking water, and her gums are pink, but still she just lays down and pants sometimes. She may be about to go into heat, but I am not sure because she has many other times, but this is the first time she has panted like this. Does anyone have any ideas as to what it could be?

Panting is not a typical sign of a dog coming into heat. Panting can be a sign of a number of things - simple things like general anxiety and stress to infections and pain. It's unusual that young dogs like yours suffer from serious problems, especially toy breeds, but it's not impossible.

To get a better idea of her condition, you can check her temperature. A glass or digital-read rectal thermometer is the most accurate way to check a dog's temperature. Insert a well lubricated thermometer so that the entire metal head is inside the rectum, but no further. If it's a digital-read, it might take only 10 seconds, but glass thermometers should stay in place for a least one full minute. If her temperature is higher than 102*, she's running a fever and needs medical attention. If her abdomen feels tense or bloated, it could be a sign of a bigger problem that also requires medical care. Contracted pupils can also be a sign of discomfort.

The panting alone might not be cause for concern if it resolves soon. If she seems to have problems laying down or can't get comfortable tonight (i.e. won't sleep), run her into an emergency clinic. It's always better to be safe than sorry. You know your pooch better than anyone else, and you've got to go with your gut. If you think she ought to be checked out, run her in to give her the once over. Good luck with her!!

I have a 4 yrs old pom, she pants a lot of the time. She has been spade, so that's not the reason. I think some of it is nerves and she get hot because of all the hair. I wouldn't worry too much unless she has some other symptoms of illness. She may be coming in heat. Mine has never been in heat, she was fixed around 5 months
If your worried though, I'd call your vet to be sure

I don't want to alarm you since i am not a vet. My dog started panting all the time, and sorry to say i had to put him down. We noticed the increased panting, and had him checked out. i will say our dog was about 8 and a little overweight. the vet diagnosed a possible tumor, and our dog was really digressing rather quickly. Again, i would say, just keep an eye on her, and have her checked out if you think you should. Maybe a call to your vet and see what they say?

Dogs sweat by panting. I am not a Vet, so I am not sure what signs of going into heat are, but she may be getting sick. You might wish to run her in just for a check-up.

have her tested for heartworms..she also could be diabetic, which excessive thirst is a symptom of, exhaustion is too.
also, make sure her undercoat has not become too thick and is constricting her body an weghing her down (common when pom owners dont brush their dog) when you brush her you have to go all the way down to the skin to get the undercoat out.. if she is matted you might need to have her shaved...
i would take her to the vet.

She could very easily be dehydrated. My cousin's dog was doing that. Turned out the he had a canine form of diabetes. By all means, take your little one to the vet. I can't really say what the matter is. Good luck to both of you.
