Only if where you live has a "leash law" or other rules concerning the confinement and control of dogs.

We just had a little boy bit by a loose dog, with serious injury and his family can't get any money out of it to help even with the medical bills because there are no rules or laws governing loose dogs in the county he lives in...

Consult animal control. They can tell you what the laws are, and then you can go forward from there.

I'm sorry about your son...it's definately traumatic. I hope things turn out in your favor, and I hope your son doesn't think all dogs are bad because of this incident. Sadly, it may take years for him to get comfortable around dogs again, if he ever does.

When I was a kid, my dog got out of the yard and bit a girl down the street. At her parents' insistence, my dog was put to sleep.

That girl had taunted my dog on her walk home from school every day for three years. She later admitted that she had opened the gate and let him out the day he bit her. I can only imagine what else she'd done after opening the gate.

Have a good heart-to-heart with your son and make sure he doesn't share any blame before you take hostile action against your neighbors.

Does the dog have a reputation as a nuisance? Have you spoken to your neighbors about covering the medical bill? Remember that these people live nearby and can extract revenge in little ways if you force them into a confrontation.

I made that girl's life a living hell for years growing up.

You may have grounds, as long as you have proof to why the dog attacked.
If it can be proved that your son was minding his own business and the dog attacked him without warning, then yes, you have grounds.

Your first step obviously is to contact a lawyer and get his professional advice on what steps you can take.

PLEASE do not let this incident spoil his idea of dogs. And this is a time that is needed to make sure he understands that animals can be unpredictable, but not all are like this and there are good animals out there.

My friend's daughter was attacked by a labrador who was just overly hot and irritated one summer day. Many stitches to the childs head, and a serious fright of dogs came from that. But her parents kept her around animals and taught her that she must overcome these things, and thankfully the child still is an animal lover and can function around dogs.

You should've contacted your local animal control first and the police. I don't know what the lawyer is going to do if you haven't paid him/her money. They won't do anything if you don't have a case. It takes a long time to get these things started. Not knowing the details, not much advice can be given, sorry. Also, you can go ahead & sue in civil court without a lawyer. Contact your local county courthouse.

Was the dog harrased by your son, or did the dog attack for no reason? If the dog was harrased, I wouldn't su for money, just medical bills. If the dog attacked for no reason, I would sue for medical and mental damages. Either way the dog should be put down. I love dogs but violence doesn't go away.

Was the injury bad enough that he had to see a doctor? Will there be any permanent scars? That is about the only way you would be able to sue and it would be mostly just to cover the medical bills. The country is too sue crazy. If you have a legitimate complaint, then sue.

Have you talked to the owners? Do you know the whole story? Have the owners tried to help out with medical bill?
You don't give much info.
What happened. What state do you live in-it makes a difference???

You probably can sue them , afterall people are sueing over everything these days just to get money.
But why don't you just insist that they keep their dog tied up and teach your son that dogs aren't always dangerous.

Yes, you can. The dog was the one who came into your yard. You can argue about how the experience has made your son afraid of animals. I think you can win the case too.

Of course, because it is the owners reponsibility to keep their dog on a leash, so you can sue them!! I hope your son is ok
