Lighting a candle is a visible symbol of your prayer. It is also a small sacrifice you make to God for the thing you pray for, and adds to the power of your prayer.

If someone knows you are lighting a candle for them it may help, and you and the other person will at least feel a bit better about the situation.
You are always welcome to light a candle for me!

May everyone have a wickedly happy Christmas or Yuletide or however they celebrate, if they do!

Prayer to our Creator is the thing that works. Lighting a candle to me is an act of remembrance of a loved one or friend.

I think that if lighting a candle is what signifies for you giving 'hope' or 'asking for help' for someone then yes. No differently than those who bow down and pray for others.
I think it's the act of believing (faith) is what really works; what is different is the instrument used.

I do and think so. I think it is based on more than just a candle and the nature you use them. AS the nature you stated, I do the same.

I always thought it was just a symbolic gesture of being in the presence of God.

About as much use as a slap in the face with a wet haddock.
