1988 Ford Aerostar wont move in any gear engine runs fine but spins like Im in neutral. Has trans fluid. Oil leaks out. Ran fine until one afternoon. Started smoking from underneath. White smoke smelled like oil leaking onto an exhaust pipe. Lost power; then shortly no acceleration. Whining grinding sounds from underneath. Automatic overdrive transmission appears to shift fine no visible broken parts underneath. Shortly before all of this happened I did notice it seemed like the trans was slipping. It felt like it does when you need fluid. You acellerate it revs but doesnt catch... then seconds later it catches and accellerates. So I added fluid but it didnt help. In fact it got worse it drove a few more blocks in 1 or 2 , but slowly lost the power to go in any gear.

Transmission, get a new car it will be much cheaper than fixing that one..I had one do that it was running great and then we were taking off from a stoplight and it pooped out, just wouldn't go anywhere and believe me when I tell you the transmission alone (if you can find one) is more than the Blue Book Value of your vehicle and then you have to pay almost double what the transmission costs you to have the shop fix it ( so not worth it) mine would have cost about 1,600 to fix and the car I owned at the time was only worth 600$, we also had a mini-van this happened too...it sucks I know but you'll find something better

Something is broken inside the transmission.Dropping the transmissions pan might give you clues especially if there are pieces in the pan.Your choices are #1. buy a used transmission from a bone yard or #2. have yours rebuilt.I would call a few different transmission shops and pick their brains about a possible cause and cost to fix versus the cost of a used transmission and the cost of installation.

My mom used to drive an Aerostar, that was the biggest piece of garbage any of us has ever owned. we had to replace the transmission, but lucky for us we caught the problem in time...... once it just wouldn't drop into gear after we pulled it out of a parking space, finally caught after a while.
we would also have the rear brakes lock up for no apparent reason after it was parked, the hand brake too.

we ended up donating the car, I really feel sorry for whoever got it! sorry to bash your ride, but I hated that car with a passion. I will never own a Ford product as long as i live.
