Talk to him or her, but not in an accusatory way. Rather, approach it with the goal in mind of having the rumor-spreading stopped.
Keep your professionalism and don't make it personal -- but let the person know that it would be nice to work in a place that does not foster a hostile work environment. Spreading rumors about someone with the intent of creating ill will does create a hostile work environment.
If the person doesn't agree to stop the rumor-spreading or otherwise gives you a hard time, then politely but firmly tell him/her that you have no choice but to take up the issue with your supervisor.

Simply put, living well is the best revenge. I would completely ignore that co worker. People that spread that kind of junk about you are going to spread it about other people as well, they can't help themselves. Sooner or later, people will see that person for what he/she really is. In the mean time, just go in there with your head held high, do your work and be happy. Even if you are not happy you must fake it. That will tick your co-worker off more than any action you take against him/her. Good Luck!

This could be very bad if supervisors start believe the lies.
So you cant just let it go..
Because if everyone is talking behind your back .. I'm sure either you will leave your job because of the rumors. or you will loose your job because people will believe the lies.
So you need to stand up... If something is said.. Ask Why. and Who said this Bull Dust.
Tell your supervisor the problem your having..
If it is feasible to move you elsewhere (away from this person).
You never know this person might have done this before and might have been warned for this behavior..
If you tell your supervisor. he might get his final warning and leave.
You really have to take control of it..
Don't let bulling continue to the work place.. Its not warrantied.
Bosses don't employ people for Bullying and standing on others or over others.
They want the job to go quickly and smoothly.
So stand up.. Be counted.. and put the jerk off in his place.
OR even better FIRED.

You may be perceiving that people hate you and are avoiding you. Carry on as normal....don't let he/she see it is affecting you...but if this really does start affecting your work environment then I'd take it up with someone in a higher position and when you do remain calm and have all your facts ready, don't make it seem like a tattle tale session.

Step 1...make sure you have your facts straight that this person is actually doing this...and make sure that you have more than one source that he or she is the culprit....if you have these facts...approach her in private, and tell her that you need to resolve what ever issues he has with you, as the rumors need to stop. If she denies, then tell her that she has 2 choices either work threw what ever issues she has, and stop the rumors, or else you will need to take this to management and have it resolved this way. And if she still refuses to co-operate, then IMMEDIATELY go to you manager, and explain what is going on....and that you have attempted to resolve it, but she is not receptive. Good Luck

If in a large enough business or any government or uni office, I would immediately file a grievance. It that doesn't work talk to any authorities outside the organization.
Or, you could always find a different job, or get fired and go on benefits.

Well Jing D, I think you should be yourself, do the opposite of what this person is saying, be nice and respectfull...then the person that is doing the slagging off looks like the liar that he/she is!!
If peeps want to believe what other peeps are saying, without having had a real conversation or got to know you, then more fool them for believing what this obviously jealous person is saying...just be yourself and let people make up there own minds!!! X

In addition to what Caty already said, when you talk to him/her, be sure to document the conversation that day. Keep a little notebook and make a note of the date, time, and exactly what was said and by whom. This documentation will be very handy if you have to go to your boss or Human Resources.
Good luck!

Send a complaint in WRITING to your boss and Human Resources. If the company doesn't do anything about the HARRASSMENT you will have grounds to sue for back pay, pain/suffering, etc if you had to leave the company due to the harrassment.
