dont tilt your head back, first of all. all the blood then drains into your stomach...not a pretty sight. pinch your nose to allow for clotting, or put a tampon in there. i know it sounds gross, but it works. we did that for the wrestlers at my high school.

I figure I will throw in my two cents, since I have quite a bit of experience in this area.

First, blowing your nose won't help. You'll remove everything from your nose. But the idea is to get the blood to clot, and if you blow the clot out, you have to start all over again.
Second, pinch your nose. Some people say the bottom of your nose, some say the top. I've tried it all. The way I find that seems to work the best is to pinch both. It can be a little tricky if you throw in the kleenex to soak up the blood. I try to hold the kleenex up against the nose with my pinky, it takes some practice. But you have to pinch the bottom more than the top to keep the blood in the nose. I don't even know how pinching the bridge of the nose helps, but it seemed to help me.
Third, do NOT tilt your head back. You want blood in your nose, otherwise what will clot? Yes, there will still be enough to clot, but for the bad ones every little bit helps. Even more important,(sort of) is your throat. I had quite a few that would last over an hour and after about a half hour of holding my head back, my throat would get VERY irritated and it would stay like that for a day or two. I also had nose bleeds a couple times a week, so i learned real quick not to hold my head back, otherwise I would have a perpetual sore throat.
Do that, and you'll be all right. If you have these as often as I do(a few a week, with ones longer than an hour also) you need to see a doc if you haven't already. Could be a number of things. I got both sides of my nose cauterized, and haven't had a bloody nose since, and I've taken some mean shots to the schnoz since then.

No, just pinch the nose and hold it for 3-6 minutes. That should stop the bleeding, if it doesn't you may need the blood vessel cauterized by a physician.

You must hold the nose throughout the time otherwise it could continue to bleed. Then don't blow your nose. If you have frequent nose bleeds, you need to find out why from a physician.

Nosebleed:

Tilt your head FORWARD and pinch the soft bit of tissue just below the bridge of the nose.

Do this for 10mins and then release and check to see if it is still bleeding. If so, repeat for another 10mins then check again. Repeat for another 10mins and if it is still bleeding (this will have been over 30mins now) then get someone to take you to hospital in the treatment position (i.e. leaned forward).

Use tissues (or a triangular bandage) to catch the blood and a bowl to spit/bleed into.

Once the bleeding stops, you are supposed to try not to blow/pick/poke your nose at all as this may disturb any blood clots which have formed and start the bleeding again, but this is damn near impossible so don't worry too much!

Man are you confused yet reading thru all these answers????

For a bloody nose - pinch the nose and keep a tissue so you can catch any blood coming from the nose then tilt your head forward slightly. This should stop the bleed quickly - if it doesn't then seek medical attention.

Do Not tilt your head back as this may cause you to choke.

You should lean over the sink, and pinch your nose for about 10 minutes to allow clotting, and the bleeding to stop. You shouldn't blow your nose becuase it could make things worse.

I think blowing the nose would just help the blood flow more freely.

Leaning your head back can cause nausea if it continues to bleed, the human stomach can only take 1 pint of blood before becoming sick like this.

Just pinching the nostrils and holding them seems to be the best common cure.

Stick your tongue (or finger for easier breathing) between your gums and your upper lip right underneath your nose and push up towards your nose. It clots the bleeding in about 5 minutes or less.

Pinch the nose and LEAN FORWARD. Some people will try to get you to lean backward, but this will just make the blood run back into your throat and cause problems. Pinch and lean forward!
