Stand your ground. if you run it will chase you and nip at your legs. I had an angry mutt dog attack me once. it came running at me at top speed, snarling with its fangs bared. I doubled up my fist and when it was about to jump me I slugged it alongside its snout as hard as I could. It ran off yipping and whining with its tail between its legs. End of confrontation.
Don't let them sense you are afraid.

Never run from a dog, he will catch you and bite you. If it is a friendly dog you know call his name and good boy. If it is a dog you either don't know or think is attacking get up on a car or behind a fence. If none are options, stand your ground high and command the dog to sit, or go, or just No. If you project enough authority the dog will feel it and respect it.
I am 4'10" and have stood my ground while walking my two little dogs and have bested a German Shepherd and a large mix.
So I know it can be done, never let them feel you fear, you don't have to.

Stand still and put your hand out to at least have something in between you and the dog. It will make the dog wonder what this is and will stop them, unless of course they are hungry and viscious, then nothing will really help. Also, don't make eye contact as to dogs, this is threatening. And whatever you do, don't run as dogs are hunters by nature and WILL chase you!

Do NOT run!! Ive had German Shepherds for the last 20 years, and they naturally play chase, when someone runs! Its just a game they enjoy, and if you run and show fear its even worse! They can sense and smell fear when you are afraid. I had a German Shepherd that would want us to run, so she could finally catch us, and put her mouth lightly on our arm, as if saying "I won, I caught you"! Its also a herding thing with some breeds too, they feel the need to herd things or people, or animals together. Its a real physiological thing with them, but you are better off to just keep your cool and stay put!!

If you ask this question, you know the right answer. Don't run, ever. It may insight the Prey Drive. Some dogs just do this to show dominance. Others want to chase. Stand your ground and try not to be frightened.

Well, if you run away the dog may think your playing a game with him. He/She would think that they were supposed to chase you and bring you down.
If you stand still, the dog may pause. and keep eye contact with you.
I'd stand still. But if the dog made any movement towards me when I was standing still, I'd run to the neariest tree. ^_^

Any dog will chase something that is moving. The faster the more the dog will chase. Stop moving. Turn sideways, tuck arms and hands close to body. If dog seems to be advancing in a slow stiff walk, tell dog to "sit" in a firm voice. If dog approaches with body all in curves, mouth open and tongue lolling out, you have a goofy pup with no manners.

Dogs can sense fear, I would not recommend running away. Calmly walk away from the dog. If you run, chances are the dog will chase you.

either jump onto something out of its reach or run AT it and attack it first. if it sees that you are not afraid and that you will fight, the dog will probably give up. if the dog attacks you, jam your dominant forearm in its mouth, put your other forearm on its neck, and press the arm in the mouth up, while pulling the other forearm down, thus breaking the dog's neck. and throw in a few knees to the stomach
