I work as a cashier in retail as a 2nd P/T job to pay off my student loans, and think these people are incredibly rude. They're the ONLY customers I don't give customer service to, because I know they won't notice either way. Am I wrong to feel this way, and am I the only one?

Gasp! MYSTRYWMN, if you know of a cashier who's unprofessional enough to be on the phone through your transaction, you need to report them! That is absolutely uncalled for, and I'm sure they disobeyed the store's policy! Incredible!

Indeed, there are very few things worse than having a customer who is trying to conduct their transactions while on their cell phone. I'm a bank teller, and that's even more annoying. I worked at a camera store before, and we had people all the time who would come in and still be on the phone, and barely say a word to us. At the bank, it's even worse, because for the most part, I'm handling someone's life savings. When one is trying to conduct business, the cell phone needs to stay off. I really appreciate the people who pick up the phone and say "Hey, I'm busy right now, but i'll call you back."
The only thing that could be more annoying is when someone picks up their phone in the middle of the transaction and takes their sweet time with the conversation. It was especially bad at the camera store. It made it hard to want to sell to that person because I didn't want to interrupt their conversation. We eventually developed an unwritten policy to not help those kinds of people until they got off their phones. My boss got mad at us, though.
If I ever have my own store, I'm going to put a signal dampener in so that people can't get cell service in my store.

The truth is that cell phones have gotten a bad rap. People blame cell phones for many things, including the charge that they are anti-social. The truth is that most people in a survey I read two years ago stated that talking on cell phones in a public was rude. The reason they gave for this behavior being rude: because they couldn't hear the other side of the conversation. They couldn't eavesdrop which is definitely a rude behavior. Cashiers are employees, they get paid to perform a service. The customer buys things with money that pay the cashier's wages. The customer is not obligated to be chatty with the cashier for the privilege of checking out. But the cashier is obligated to wait on the customers. That's their job.

I was at Lowe's the other day and the customer in front of me was on the cell phone. Thankfully whenever the Cashier asked him a question he responded. But seriously at least they could do is tell the person they are on the phone with is I need to put you on hold. they are so rude.
And to answer your question, No you are not wrong to feel this way and you are not the only one to feel this way. If I were the cashier and If I could I would call security and tell the security to ask them to wait until theya re done with there phone call before they make there purchase. The cell phone person is very rude and disrespectful.

I've worked as a cashier and basically never said a word to anyone who was on their cell phones. In keeping with cell phone etiquette, though, I absolutely HATE when I'm eating in a restaurant with someone and the cell phone of the person I'm with rings and they answer it and proceed to talk the whole time I'm with them. It bothers me. Apparently the person calling them is more important than me, the person right in front of them. I mean, I can understand if it's an emergency, but generally if it's an emergency, that person is out of there, apologizing.

I used to be a retail manager, and yes there are people with cell phones glued to their head. In such a case, there's not much you can do. If they're not going to hear you anyway, what's the point? Just work on a need to know basis until they leave. And save the customer service for the customers who are there to actually shop.

I do think this is incredibly rude. I use to work as a cashier during high school. Yet, I've always thought that the rudest people were the ones who looked you dead in the eye when you said "Hi," then completely blew you off. No "Hi", "Kiss my butt", or anything.

I work in a medical office rotating between check-in and check out...we have signs posted everywhere tell people to turn off their cell phones in the building, as they can interfere with some of the medical equipment that we have.....they completely ignore the signs....here we are, TRYING to get important facts about their health..insurance ...ect.....or we are attempting to schedule appointments, and they are chatting away, making us wait, even if we request that they turn off their phones, I get the *just a moment* guester from them as they continue with their cell conversation. It is appalling to me how rude society has become!

Be happy that you have the job, that it'll helps pay off your student loan. Enjoy the job, it can be done. Rude customers are the spice of life (job) and they are NOT the majority, when you think of it. Focus on the nicer customers, it helps to make you feel better. Think of the job as of a service to others (on the other line) that needs your help, and you are the only one that can help them. Focus on the positive aspects of your job/customers and you'll find that you'll enjoy it. I'm in customer service my whole life!

I know! I hate that! SO rude!!!!!
Runners up would be the customer who put a marker on the counter to be rung up. When I picked it up to scan it, it was slimy. Obviously their kid had been slobering on it. Oh goodie! Thank gods for hand sanitizer.
Or the little brat the other night who decided it would be funny to drop his (chewed) gum in the middle of my counter. Again, thank gods for hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes.
