Yesterday, I was working with this guy and we were chatting about our favorite restaurants. I then mentioned this one restaurant that I really liked. I asked if he had been there before or if he knew which one I meant. He responded with the comment: "Are you asking me on a date?" I was completely floored and said no. I have no interest in this guy and was just making polite conversation.

Was this the wrong thing to say to a person? Do many guys respond this way to an offhand comment such as this? Should I address the issue again with him? It was a very awkward situation.

(P.S. I'm 18 and he is 19, if it matters.)

No it was not wrong to say. This guy may have been kidding or he may have hidden feelings for you that he is too scared to come out and admit to you directly. Most guys wouldn't act that way otherwise. I would let the waters settle and then see how things are.

it mostly depends on who started the conversation. if he startedit then he is probably interested in u but doesnt know how to ask u out. if u dont like him as more than a friend then try staying away from him and create very little conversation

It all depends on how he said it. He may have been making a joke. Or maybe he just misunderstood. Leave the subject alone unless a problem arises from it.

He asked you a simple question and you are blowing it way out of porportion. All he did was ask you if you were asking him out on a date...maybe he was secretly hoping that you were. I would say drop it since you're not interested in him. You told him no so he is quite aware that you're not interested.

ok...that is really weird. maybe he wants to go out with U so he found it as an easy way out. he didnt have to ask to get wat he wanted. does that make sense? or maybe he just got the wrong idea. he probably expected u to talk to him about restaurants but not mention if he'd been there. he thought u were asking...idk...i hope this can answer your question...

It wasn't rude, maybe he thought that you were asking him on a date. If you aren't interested there is no need to bring the subject up again.

maybe he liked you and you opened the door up for him to mention it without being embarassed from rejection so he turned the tables possibly to feel you out?leaving you in awkward spot and getting his answer at the same time

It's exactly what you should have said if that's how you feel. He was probably feeling you out to see if there was any interest and now he knows there's not, without any hurt feelings or embarassment.

He is probably interested in you. If you do not want to go out with him leave it where it is. If you do, say, "by the way I was asking you out".
