Had the same questions 2 weeks ago, and I don't think it is worth the money to spend, I am currently in a holding pattern for the HD-DVD's prices to come down, you can find them now for around 400$, maybe after the new year or mid 2007 the price will come down.

The up-conversion works on all DVDs. I started looking into this subject today after I got an upconverter DVD player - and discovered that the only way it would upconvert is via using the HDMI connector. If your TV does not have HDMI, you are looking at more than just the player.

My problem is that my TV has just a DVI. So, I will also need an HDMI <-> DVI converter, but I would lose the audio in the process! Plus, that converter from Monster is about 35. The area behind my TV is becoming a nest of cables.

The upconverting feature works on all DVD movies (rent or buy). But, I wouldn't waste your money on it. It helps marginally. Save your money and wait until the HD format war is over because that is true HD. Upconverting is pseudo HD, not true HD.

Also, you need to have an HDTV and HDMI to take full advantage of the upconverting DVD players. If you don't have one or the other, you will not even be able to tell the difference from a standard progressive DVD player.

100-200 for a good player.
20-well infinity for the HDMI cable
Small investment that I think is worth it
I have an expensive Denon DVD player that on does progressive scan. I hooked up a $100 samsung DVD player to my Samsung 4272 plasma with a $100 HDMI cable and was amazed at the difference
It wasn't sharper at least not that I could see but the colors just seemed to pop off the screen. Darks looked nicer and had more detail in the shadows. Not bad for 200$ but I wish I would have bought that Oppo DVD player because it seems to get some amazing reviews.

and they do work for all DVDs

Yes, you can get some cheap upconverting dvd players around $115 bucks. I would definitely suggest in getting one if you have a high resolution LCD or Plasma. Might as well spend the extra few bucks.
