I am trying to use one hot side of a irrigation system generator, with the other wire of the socket tied to ground. The bulb lighted for about 5 minutes....seemed great. Then it blew out the screw-in base. Should I switch leads on the socket? Or use a limiting fuse? Maybe the hot side should be on the point of the bulb, huh? The bulbs are $9 apiece and I don't want to burn out another one.

You could try putting two bulbs in series. They will drop the voltage about 220v a piece.

Hold the bulb in your mouth, then put one finger of each of your hands into opposite sides of the socket. This should give enough Resistance to light the bulb brilliantly!!!!
