What does a rebuild consist of and is it worth rebulid or should i purchase a new engine? Is it better to purchase a new engine, what would I be able to fit and what would be the price range be? I am not doing the rebuild myself, I will have the work professionally done. I have found a shop that will do the rebulid for $1800 and want to know if this is an average or overpriced?

A New engine will be much more expensive.
The price you are listing sounds fairly reasonable, however, if you feel that they may be taking advantage of you get quotes from at least 2 or 3 other shops in the area to get a range of what you might be charged, also, does that fee include removing and reinstalling the engine? Those are not trivial tasks...
If the engine is professionally rebuilt by a reputable shop, then the engine if treated properly should last nearly as long as a new engine.
When the rebuild is complete and you get your car back, the shop should give you instructions on how to drive the car to "break in" the engine just like when it was new.
If you treat the engine right with regular maintenance, oil changes, etc. then you should have no problems with it and should get many good miles out of it.
Good luck!

I can understand your love for your nissan, i have had four nissans 2 primeras and 1 serena and they are great. if i were you i would go for the rebuilt engine, if you get another dog you get another set of fleas, and the devil you know is better than.... i know a chap who got a brand new merc and it was troubble from day 1. even the seatbelt was faulty. if your car is still under warranty you would not have to pay a penny for the engine replacement. Most nissans have 1 merit other cars dont... They have no timming belt they have a timing chain instead which will last the lifetime of the car almost all other cars have belts which need changing every 100,000miles at least. if you do choose to go for the rebuilt engine, you should be ok. Always warm your car up for at least 2mins to let the oil circulate and lubricate the block b4 you drive off this reduces wear friction and increases engine health. without doing this its like waking someone up from sleep and getting them to do a 100metre dash without a warm up. Perhaps this is what happened to your car. Castro magnatex oil clings to the inner parts so the oil does not drain down when the car is at rest. finally try never to push a car to its limit, but with the speed cameras and nature of our roads this may be unlikely. My first car was a vauxhaul astra, i parked on a yellow line during euro 2000 pourtugal beat england, upset i left my car on the line and went to work came back and my car was not there. The council had towed it away. now i bought it for 250 pounds and used 170 to claim it reason being i was emotionally attached as it was my first car, and i had so many happy motoring miles from it then on. i wish you the very best with your altima and i hope my advice has been helpful- Nigel U.K

First I would ask why? How many miles are on the car? Is it leaking or burning oil, does the car smoke. Has it ever been over heated if so how many times. You can get 300k miles out of these engines if maintained properly.
What warranty will they give you. Do you intend on keeping the car and if so for how long. Shop around on th internet for remanufactured japan engines even the dealer can get you a price. If you need to re build make sure it is a total rebuild top and bottom of the engine. Never just do the bottom or top on a 22 year old car.

well a new engine will set you back about $5000 give or take, but at that age i'm guess the transmission isn't that good either. a rebuild usually consists of taking everything apart, replacing the bolts and damaged parts, new bearings, sleeves, gaskets, seals. and then putting it back together, usually they will rebuild the heads, ask about that if they do or don't, if they don't, find out how much more it would be to do, thats a good option to do with a rebuild. after a rebuild its close to the same as a new engine, but it won't last as long since some components, such as the block are already wron, and theres nothing to do about it.

Being a 300zx owner myself, I can tell you that the VG30E is one of the best motors Nissan ever made. The beauty of the motor is that it is over-built, meaning that it can take A LOT more power than it will ever encounter (+500hp). This contributes to why they last so long. Having the engine rebuilt would be in your best interest. Be sure that they replace all the parts that have worn out. Especially piston rings, old gaskets, etc. $1800 isn't bad at all, just make sure to check out their reputation to make sure they do good work. Best wishes to you and the car. Gotta love those Z31's!

That price seems low if labor is included. Make sure you get the quote for the engine rebuild, labor and all the extra parts required to complete the job and receive a warranty (tune-up parts, belts, hoses, radiator cleaning or replace, water pump, etc...) The total should run you around $2,500 and up.

That's such an ugly car! Why not step up to a z32 series, the good looking one. Is it realy worth rebuilding that ancient technology engine... Look into finding a JDM motor from the z32 series cars, one with transmission and ECU (turbo, maybe). Then find a custom shop to do the work. Might cost more, but the horsepower difference will make up for it...
