I want to stop perming my hair!! Right now I pincurl my hair w/ a leave in conditioner 2-3 times a week & wear it in a curly fro. Will this cause my hair to break off? What are some alternatives - I don't want to shave my head & I don't want to wear braids.

When I went natural, I cut off all the relaxer and wore braids. If you don't wish to go that route, remember to keep your hair moist. I use glycerin mixed with rosewater (you can buy it mixed together at the pharmacy). I use it in a spray bottle. Glycerin is great for keeping moisture- that's what our hair needs. You can also keep your in cornrows or do 'braid outs'. There are many options so don't give up. Going natural was the best decision I ever made. Just do a little bit of research and I'm sure you'll find styles to help you transition until you're ready to do the big chop. Since hair grows about 6" a year on average, just be patient. I've listed some sites below in case you're interested. God bless!

Yes, eventuall the permed hair will break off. The difference in textures, porosities and such will force it to break when you manipulate the strands with both natural and permed portions. Pinculrs are good, rolling on permrods for a more afro-y look is good, wigs are good too. There are different extentions besides braids as well. Kinky twists and such. Good luck.

twist-out or straw-set are the easiest ways to hide both textures.

i stopped perming in march of 01 and made the big chop in august of 01. i went through the transitioning phase with micro-braids and just got tired of dealing with it. it is best to get it cut off as soon as possible. the permed ends hinder growth, and can cause damage to your natural hair. your natural hair is stronger so the permed ends start to break off eventually.

Good Luck.
