Just wondering because I keep coming across it in films but it's not in a spanish dictionary.
So there's no direct english translation? but it's not rude as such? Like you wouldn't use it to insult someone directly more like an a word to affectionately diss your friends sort of thing?

and while we're on the subject of cuss words how about some direct translations of puto, puta and any other words that I might need to insult people in Spanish.
I'm learning Spanish at the moment, the course is kinda dull, it's teach me how to say "How much will the taxi cost to the city" and other such travel guide level Spanish but I need some good curse words to punctuate my Spanish and besides they come up in movies and spanish words loads.

Cabron can have different meanings which depend on the context that it is used in.
1. Cabron comes from the word "cabra" which means goat. It was first used by Argentinian president Domingo Peron after discovering that his wife Eva Peron slept with almost all his cabinet. I guess it relates to their horns. Cabron (male goat) can be used for someone whose partner is cheating on him.
2. Cabron also means pimp
3. Rude, jerk and asshole.
4. In Cuba it describes someone who is in a bad mood. However in Mexico you will use esta encabronado, instead of cabron.
On the positive side
5. Can be used to describe a very experienced person or a person that is very good at something. Eg. Mi hermano esta cabron en matematicas. My brother is really good at maths. Estoy cabron en... I am really good at...
6. In some Latin American countries it can also mean friend. Que pasa cabron? (What's up pal?)
The use of cabron can be very rude if you combined with other bad words e.g. Pinche cabron or cabron hijo de puta (cabron + son of a *****). Although cabron can have some positive meanings among friends it is always rude to use it.
Hope this helps.

Silly Sally is wrong, as she so often is. Cabrones is the plural of cabrone, which can be roughly translated to "jackass." It's not too bad, really, as far as Spanish curse words go. There are far worse.

Actually it can mean anything from "man" to pimp, depending on the country.
I tutored Spanish speaking people at a uni a little while back. I learned a lot from them.

Cabron means b*stard so cabrones is plural it means b*stards in the films.
Spanish does not literally translate very well, in the movies that is what they mean

A cabra is a goat and a cabron is a big, stupid he-goat (cabrones is its plural). So, I would say, yes, it is rude. Cajon is a coffin and cajones would be cofins, I guess. Or boxes??
