There are a lot of crappy things about the SF career field, but overall I loved it! I retrained into abother career field after my first enlistment, but still loved my SF time. The reason for my retrain was not a hatred for SF, but a desire to do something different.

So much to say, long hours, hard work, deployments, BS. There was a lot of fun too. It's all what you make of it. Like I said, I loved it, but I was a law enforcement troop. I'm sure if I was a missle cop I would not have liked it so much.

Like all careers, there are good and bad jobs in Security Police. Unfortunately, for entry level people it often involves long lonely hours patrolling high priority resources that are away from the main base. On the other hand it doesn't take as long as other fields to advance to a higher position where you'd be leading others. Also, if you have any ambition to work for a law enforcement agency when you get out of the service, you'd be at the top of the list, since you would have already proved yourself.

It's not really a bad AFSC. I have always enjoyed my time either working along side them deployed, or as an IMA. Of the few that I have known that have disliked it, they were 18-19 and had less than a year in. There oppinion was based not so much on the job, but the fact that they still needed to acclimatize to the military way. SF is definitly a different mindset as compared to big blue, who seemingly quits work because of a thunderstorm or what not, and SF'rs don't exactly get that luxury. lol Also, of those that have a bad oppinion of them in the AF, usually, have never served in that capacity, and rarely know anything about the job anyhow, so there oppinion is baseless in my estimation.

Wowers...where do I begin? Really though, it depends on the squadron and its mission. Also the individuals frame of mind. I really don't think it has anything to do with getting accustomed to the military. A finance troop would piss their pants at the thought of standing in the rain checking IDs or other tasks SF are called upon. And yes, we are called upon to do anything and everything, mission related or otherwise (like base clean-up). Yes there are Pro's to the AFSC...but sometimes the bad out weighs them. Hours/ time off is a big one. Why does everybody in the Wing get a down day (day off) because it can give them a 4-5 day break for the holidays? Do you think we get those?? No, no, no...and for a lot of reasons. They say we are cructial to the base for defense, etc...but why do we get sh!ted on by everyone and their spouse? Don't have money, the gear or the time off like the rest of the AF. We work longer, harder (minus the STS operators) than the rest of the AF...

Some people think all they do is check ID's at the gate and gaurd planes. I don't understand why either. I guess alot of negative comments come from people who dont really understand it. Like with any job in the military you can sit around and B**** about it or move up and sdo something that really makes you feel worthwhile. Like the Phoenix Raven program,counter-snipers or Military Working Dog Handler. There are a few more just cant think of them all right now. Like my husband suffered through a few years of sitting on a post for 12+ hours but now he is a dog handler and really enjoys his work!

Several reasons:
1- Typically in the past, the USAF put its, well less than stellar AFQT scholars in SF. Dealing with them, wouldn't give you much confidence in their abilities. This is changing though.
2- It's the most "army like", well other than Combat Controllers/and maybe PJs.
3- They work at what some would consider extremely boring posts: ID check, guarding aircraft, patrolling flightlines.
4- Quality of life for most SF troops is somewhat less than for the rest of the AF
