Why do some people never return items that they barrow from you?

I have neighbors who o barrow my expensive tools and i have to contact them to get them returned.

because they are hoping you will forget about them and that they can keep them. what does this have to do with dogs?

Its funny as people always find this a problem.
With money or with item, I always set a time frame before I give it out, and I make sure the other person acknowledges it.

"hey can I borro 20 bucks"
"when are you going to pay me back?"
"uh uh uh ...."
"no...when are you going to get paid...okay fine Ill lend you 20 bucks now, but next thursday comes your not going to make this get uncomfortable where youre going to make an excuse not to pay me right"
if this makes other person uneasy..then they will retract their
request. Otherwise its only being prudent.
if they dont like the question, they probably werent going to pay
you anyways

or

"can I borrow your Lawnmower"
"when are you going to bring it back"
"uh um..whne I finish"
"whens that? I lend it to you until monday.. if you dont finish th lawn by then, bring it back ill lend it to you again next saturday"

It might sound bad or tacky, but it sets an agreement in advance, and reminds that person, hey im lending it to you and youre agreeing when youre going to give it back.
And, if I value a igh dollar item like a 300 lawnmower, then Im controlling the situation -- afterrall it is my lawnmower and I WANT IT BACK.

To many times people just lend other people things, and it creates that awkwardness. Well its these people who are allowing this situation to be created.
what might sound like tacky to some, is a firm I want my stuff returned in a timely manner to others.

Guess it just depends on what type of person you are and how much you value your items.

Don't ya just hate that? I will never borrow out my movies or books again. The last time I did to the same person, I never got one of the movies back or a book. That really made me angry.

First don't let anyone borrow your stuff.
People usually don't return stuff because they hope you forget about it so that they can keep it and not have to buy one..I suggest you go over to their house and get your stuff back.Next time they ask for it tell them oh,i can't right now cuz i need to use it.and if the next day they ask again you tell them oh,i haven't had a chance to do what i have to do with it.i'll let you know though.and just never let them use it.......or you can just tell them that they take too long with your stuff and you don't want them to use it anymore.go buy one for yourself

i think it is because either
a. they keep forgetting to return it and have had it for so long that they are embarassed to return the item.
or
b. they lost the item
c. they like the item so much that they don't want to return it

it is very annoying when people don't return items, so never lend anything that you definitely want back!

I hate that also, so I've quit letting people borrow my stuff, after many of the "can't find" the tools that I let them borrow, or just plain deny borrowing them.

Quit loaning things. Never loan anyone anything. You have the right to say no to people without explaining anything. Consider it an expensive lesson.

Well maybe because they think its nice. But its still wrong. They shouldnt have a right to steal to get what they want. solution is to ask them those tools back. O&O.

Some people do that because they either forget or they remember and never get to it. Some people justdont return stuff because they want it and dont want to give it back.

some people just do not realize how valuable some things are to someone else. Sad to say that some people will just keep doing it over and over to you till you put a stop to it
