Great engineering. Excellent value for the money in terms of build quality. Substandard reliability. Electrical problems are relatively common. Volkswagen as a company has a reputation for being slow to respond to consumer complaints and issues and reluctant to recall things (google "VW window regulators")
They are a mixed bag. They make some of the nicest looking cars on the road and offer 85% the feel of an expensive European car for about 70% of the price.
The TDI diesel is brilliant and in my opinion, it's the one thing that makes all the rest worth putting up with. It delivers the real world mileage that the hybrids promise but fail at, without any of the complexity of the hybrid technology and the TDI motor will likely last 3x as long as any hybrid beta test vehicle.
Volkswagens are for people who love European cars and notice little things like how the dashboard plastic feels and how thick the steering wheel is and appreciate attention to detail. People who just want a point A to point B machine and are very concerned with reliability over everything should steer clear of VW.

Absolute crap. Neither the Jetta nor the Passat is very reliable. Sure, there will be anecdotal evidence posted here about the "wonder car" someone owns--but check out "Consumer Reports" if you want the unadulterated scoop about any make and model.
