You want to consider more than their looks! How much activity level do you like? Some breeds are much more active than others. How intelligent do you want your dog? Are you looking for a companion dog, or more? Do you want a dog that is easy to house-train, or are other considerations more important to you? How are grooming? Do you have the time to do a lot, or just a little?

Please take a look at some dog sites to consider which breed will fit your lifestyle the most. And consider adopting a dog from the shelter. Dogs from breeders and petshops are often in-bred and will often have more health problems. You can find all kinds of dogs available for adoption at petfinder.com

It really depends on the energy level you are looking for...if you are mostly looking for a mellow, lap dog a jack russell wouldn't be a good idea. Pick out some breeds that you think you like and then search them to read about habits, training , excersise requirements etc. You and the dog will both be happier if you find the breed that best suits your lifestyle.

Well, as people have said, it depends on your lifestyle but in my opinion the best small dog is either a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel OR a Pomeranian. my friend has one of both and not only are they cute, they are both as happy lazing around the house as they are running about in a field, though the pomeranian does prefer to be carried, but i think its just coz he's a snobby dog! lol

Don't decide on cute along. Decide on your life style. Live in apartment a poodle toy or miniature they don't shed. Live in your own home I like a mini pin no grooming but requires alot of exercise. Look on web pages like puppy find.com or AKC puppies.com Don't get the smallest you want one about 6 pounds or up with full grown. smaller size in weight can brake a leg jumping off your chair to the floor. Chihuahuas have suited our family best. They are great lap dogs. They definitely expect all (and more!!) of your undivided attention. Very posessive...they will be wary of anyone that they don't see often. It's cute at first...but they can be snappy (mine hasn't been so far...he just shakes and barks) and timid.

They shake when they are nervous or cold. So mine is definitely a baby with me cuddling him all the time, to reassure him or warm him up.

Chi's are great dogs...but like all dogs require stability, medical check-ups, daily (hourly+) attention....so make it a well thought decision....they would be heartbroken if you didn't think it through....as would any dog that came to love you.

I hope you find your perfect match, I know I have!!

I personally like Miniture Pinchers but they are very hyper and high strung so if you want a dog to be a lap dog then Miniture Pinchers are not the best choice for you,,, if you want a lap dog then a Yorkie or Poodle will work,,, I hope this helps and good luck on your new puppy when you get them

Pomeranian or a Mixed breed from a shelter. That should be the first place you look for a dog. so many are killed for no reasons in shelters every Day. I really Like pomeranians because of there good personality's.

I've been looking for a dog also and in all the books I've read the chihuahua is the best small dog. They tend to be great for carring around with you and they don't eat that much.

The Jack Russel Terrier. They are incredibly smart, loyal dogs that are capable of going from "Play" mode to "Work" mode in a matter of seconds, they are very fast, and if you live on a farm, will keep the vermin population down a treat!

I know because we have two!

you don't buy because they are cute you buy a breed which fits in with your lifestyle...whether you have children..garden..prepared to groom for hours..long walks or short walks go to the kennel club site and browse around a few breeds before deciding which breed would suit ...listen to your brain NOT your heart a dog is for life and deserves to be in a permanent home
