Run Scandisk or Chkdisk.
Windows 95/98:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run and type scandisk in the run box
3. Click ok
4. Within the scandisk window select the drive that you wish to be checked.
5. Choose the option between standard and through. It is recommended you run standard first, if you encounter issues with scandisk then run the through scan.
6. Finally, click start to begin scandisk.
WinXP:
1. Double-click My Computer
2. Highlight a local hard disk drive by clicking on it once.
3. Right click the highlighted local drive
5. Click properties
6. Click the tools tab and click check now to check the drive for errors.
7. The computer will need to restart in order to run chdsk (check disk, the improved scandisk) in a safe mode.

courses working interior the historic past would reason variations to the disk contents jointly as defragmentation is on. this would reason it to restart. start up in secure mode, (so no exterior courses could run), then defragment. P.S: For extremely speedy defragmentation, convert your Ccontinual to the NTFS report equipment (style the command "convert C: /FS:NTFS" interior the command instant). It takes 2-3 min to defragment a NTFScontinual, jointly as a pair of million/2 an hour for a FAT32continual.

My site below will help you with this. Look under the Computer Talk section then go to Optimizing System Performance. There is also a chance that the errors can be fixed by running either scan disk or check disk. Hope this helps

You must run the checkdisk program. Usually it will not run when you try to start it. It will say something like, "Do you want checkdisk to run when you start Windows again?" Say yes.
Then reboot your pc and it will go into the checkdisk program and repair the disk errors.
To get to checkdisk, click on Start, Run then type in chkdsk and push .
After the disk is repaired, you can then defrag the disk.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
