Some environmentalist condemned mountaineering as ecologically destructive but mountaineers claimed the opposite.

Yes and no. Large expeditions to remote and difficult peaks (such as Everest) often take many weeks to complete and a large amount of supplies are necessary. Some groups leave supplies behind when they leave the mountain. This is exactly what is happening in the Himalaya's and similiar areas.

However, 99% of mountaineering is done in small groups of less than five. These trips are often half-day to one-week challenges and large amounts of gear are not necessary. Equipment is not left behind unless in an emergency and climbers are typically environmentally conscious and will follow leave-no-trace principals.

Lately there have been lots of issues with moutaineers leaving large amounts of human waste on the mountains they climb. It does not decompose on rock like it might in the forest or some other place in nature. It has become very expensive to send rangers to clean up the mess. Not to mention trash and other things left behind. If you are going to spend any time out in nature
you have to be prepared to pack out trash...and yes, even your own waste.

not only are O2 bottles left on mountains, but bodies as well. Trash is NOT taken back down and the effects of the trampling on the trails is devastating in the long run.

I would say mountaineers and scientists are the two worst people known for leaving their crap all over the mountains

Just go look at the mess in the Himalayas. There's your answer. A pristine landscape in the 1950's is now a lot of garbage.
