Originally it was the flag of the Confederacy during the years preceding and during the Civil War. Since then, the flags meaning has changed somewhat. At that time it was a representation of a new forming country, with a star for each state (like ours). But now, it is more a symbol of home to those who live down South. It's all about roots and where you come from.

If you are speaking of the "Stars & Bars" of the Confederate states, during The American Civil War, or "The War of Northern Agression," as it is still known by the really old people of The South. The colors of the flag each represent an ideal. White being the purity of heart and red the blood shed on the battlefield to protect states right's. The Star's, of corse represent the states that seseded the Union, creating The Confederate States of America.

The rebel flag represented the southern United States in the civil war. While many ignorant people believe that it stood for racism, it actually stood for the south having had enough of the over taxations handed down upon them from the north. The act of freeing the slaves was the final straw the south could handle. The rebel flag represented the souths way of saying no more to over taxation and to much government (kind of the same boat we are in today). As to those that beleive that it represented slavery, those individuals do a injustice to the more than 10,000 african americans who fought and died for the Confederacy.

It was one of many battle flags used by the Confederacy during the American Civil War.
It was popularized by segregationists during the 1950's, who used it as a pointed warning that they wouldn't accept Supreme Court rulings ordering desegregation.
Therefore, the flag is not only a reminder of the CSA and all that it stood for, but also the actions of segregationists who provided a very ugly time in our country's history.

It is the epitome of the south where slavery and white supremecy reigned pre civil war. Today the rebel flag stands for the few backwards rednecks who think we should go back to those days.
