I'm 30 yrs old and have been getting cold sores (herpes) ever since I was 12yrs old and stupidly kissed a girl who was infected. Other than going to the Doctors and getting a prescription of Zovirax what do you find is the best way/remedy that you have to avoid getting cold sores or to keep them from getting bad? I'm american and get a few a winter and hate it. Oddly enough I lived in England for 3 1/2 yrs and only got 1 or 2 and they were way smaller and less noticable there. Weird.

Zovirax is good -- because it not only should shorten your outbreak but should reduce the shedding of the virus that continues to occur when the cold sore itself is gone.

I have always found, for myself, that an ice cube applied at the very first tingling nips it in the bud. That's just my own personal experience. Abreva is also pretty good.

A lot of people do swear by lysine -- if you are more prone during the winter then take the supplement daily.

I feel your pain (literally) I have been getting them since I was about 8 years old, and it's sucked ever since. Over the years I have tried EVERYTHING under the sun, and the only thing that has worked for me has been Acylovir (generic form of Valtrex). If I have it handy, I will take the pill the VERY SECOND I feel a cold sore coming on, and it doesn't even erupt at all. Which is impoartant, because usually I go from feeling the initial tingle to full blown cold sore in about 2 hours. Just ask your doc to write you a prescription...usually they will allow you to refill them for up to a year so you can easily have a supply ready to go when you need it.

Home remedies, Abreva (over the counter) and everything else never worked for me. I get cold sores when my immune system is down due to stress, lack of sleep, or sickness. Sometimes i will get them from being in the sun too long, but that hardly ever happens. AND, sometimes I won't even get them on my lip, once in a while I will get them under my nose.

Long story short...cold sores SUCK! good luck

I only get an outbreak if I've had too much sun. So, if that happens I start taking the Zovirax. I haven't had an outbreak in 20 years. Is there a special trigger that brings them on? If so, watch for it and start with the Zovirax right away and most likely you won't break out at all. A friend of mine only broke out when she ate too many tomatoes. So there's lot of potential triggers. I hope that works for you!

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

The cheapest way to help to relieve your pain is using the hydrogen peroxide, salt and mix with water to rinse your mouth about 3 times a day. It can speed up your healing process. Besides, drink more water and stay away from spicy food. Stress can also cause you having cold sore.

I get cold sores also especially when i get run down,i use LYSINE tablets. These tablets are natural and are made by Natures own brand not sure if you can get them where you live. You have to take them as soon as you feel them coming on and i find them quicker then using cream. Vanessa
