We've been going out for almost 3 1/2 years...we live with her parents in a state where I don't really know anyone and my closest family is 4 hours away. We're trying to work on our problems and I'm moving out soon into an apartment but...it's just so hard to deal with it and take my mind off it...I get better for a while but then I go right back to thinking about everything. We've agreed not to see other people during this time and if all goes well in about 6 months we will get back together.
At the same time, once I move out I'll have to sign a lease for 6-12 months...what happens if things don't work out and I'm stuck here not knowing anyone? Anyone ever have this problem before?

Then you can cancel your lease. They normally let you do this as long as you pay for the rent until they can find someone else. Sounds like you're in love. I hope she knows how lucky she is. That's a big sacrifice you have made.
I haven't had that problem because I was never willing to do anything like that. I have never felt strongly enough about a person to do that. I hope all goes well for you. Good luck. You deserve to be happy. Just really try to work out everything if you love her. Don't walk away to regret it and wonder "what if" for the rest of your life.

So get out and MEET people. Quit sitting around whining about how you don't know anyone. Join a church, join a gym, take a class at a local college, learn a new hobby, take up a new sport. GET YOUR OWN place. This "on again off again" crap is immature at best. If she wants to break up then BREAK UP, don't play this "well if you're still around in a few months maybe will try again". That is NOTHING but a childish game which actually means "I don't want you but heaven forbid you meet someone else who might so I'll just keep you around until I feel like giving you some of my time". That's not being in a relationship that is being USED

adidis: Try to sublet an apartment for the duration. If you are emotionally attached to your girl [ex] , then, be prepared to go through hell and back with your emotions ( yes, girls reading this ... some of us guys have feelings too) ! No sooner will you begin to forget about her then, something comes up to remind you of her. Otherwise; if you don't care about her anymore, just get involved with life happening around you. You will be busy re-establishing yourself. Good luck to you !!!

Maybe moving into your own apartment is the best thing. This way you can invite her over to your place and you can show her a more romantic and responsible you. You never know maybe she will move in there with you.
