I have a 28in 16:9 dvd player in my room. If you get a standard tube, your picture must be set on 4:3. If you get a wide screen tv/plasma and you dont have Hd Tv. You can set it to Panorama or 16:9. That will fill up the whole screen. Also a Tv that makes regular cable look good is a plasma thats EDTV. Thats enhanced defintion for people that do not want HDTV. They run about 800-1000 for a 40 inch LCD. Deals are everywhere on those.

Some DVDs are mastered with a black bar on top and bottom. It doesn't matter what kind of tv you have, you will still see it. You can set your tv ratio to 4:3 or Zoom but the picture won't look as good. You can also go into your dvd player setup screen to set the ratio too.
