Only God knows how many people will enter Heaven and many will enter Hell. What we do know is that God swore to fill both of them up. That's a pretty huge statement, considering the fact that the universe is like a ring in a desert compared to the first heaven, and the first heaven is like a ring compared to the second, and so on...there are seven heavens..and Paradise is bigger than all of them...
I would imagine Hell is about the same size: the sun and the moon will be thrown in it, so its definetly big!
Hell is eternal for some, temporary for others.
I do not think the same thing can be said about Heaven: once you enter, it's forever.
You have to keep in mind, though, that, in Islam, we also have purgatory like Catholics. This is known as 'Sirat', or 'Bridge' in English. It is the bridge that extends over Hell and leads to Heaven. It is thinner than a hair and sharper than a sword. There are hooks and all types of things that scratch you on the way etc... til each person is cleansed from his/her sins, for only those that are pure can enter Heaven.
For more details on the bridge, you can go to my msn space:
http://spaces.msn.com/saqqar/ under the heading 'The Bridge'
(to find it, press ctrl + F and type the bridge, or just scroll down until you see the heading)
for details about Hell, you can go to:

Peace be with you

Actually, Smiley Face, hell is not eternal in Judaism. We believe that you can not be in hell permanently (a common number for the maximum length of time you will spend there is one year) We say a prayer for our dead called Kaddish for one year after they pass away, in order to plead with G-d on their behalf. However, there is the same question asked here as is asked about creationism (many Jews believe in both evolution and creationism, the two are by no means mutually exclusive), and this question is "what is time to G-d?" His year may be much longer than our year, which is why we believe that it people will be in hell for different amounts of time. I suppose it is rather, although not exactly, like the Christian idea of Purgatory.

I can't answer for Islam, but for every other faith I've come in contact with, there is no answer. We'll find out when the time comes.
And yes, hell is eternal in Islam, just as it is in Judiasm and Christianity.

people will be judged according to their deeds. some will dwell in hell and some will dwell in heaven and some will pay their dues in hell then dwell in heaven afterwards.
