Our rabbit had ear mites once and we treated the area with baby
oil. It cleared up quickly and we used a natural remedy. It was
applied on the tip of a Q-tip. Be sure to be very gentle.

Yes, usually he has ear mites if there is copious amount of black crusty discharge in the ears and your dog is extremely itchy. The only way to know for sure is for your vet to do an ear mite swab or look in the ear canal with a video otoscope (she can actually see the little buggers). If he does have mites you can get rid of them "naturally" with mineral oil. You put the oil in the ears - it suffocates the mites. Hope this helps!

Our cats get ear mites sometimes and we always know by looking in their ears and if there's a bunch of brown goopy looking stuff we get some ear swabs (for humans) and some ear drops from either the vet or wal-mart and clean out their ears with the swabs CAREFULLY and then drop in the drops.
Our cats usually walk with their head ****** at a weird angle when they have mites too. It's kinda funny and sad at the same time.

I use to work for a dog groomer, and she use to clean her client's pet's ears out regardless if they LOOKED dirty or not, she use to say the only way to know how healthy an animals ear's were is by SMELL.
Ear mite's sometimes show themselves by leaving what looks like flea dirt behind in parts of the outer inner ear.

Don't rely on wax buildup to tell you. Don't rely on dirty ears to tell you. If your dog is constantly itching his ears take him to your vet. The vet can tell you if it is ear mites. It may not be ear mites it could be an infection or in certain dogs their hair grows excessively in the ears. Don't treat something you are not certain of. Let the vet make the diagnosis and decide the treatment.

If your dog has frequent wax buildups they usually have mites.
You can purchase ear drops from your vet without making an appointment.
