Well, 1 months salary is certainly the custom...
But I never spent that much... For one, I couldn't afford it!
We all have bills and such that don't stop...
What I did do though, is find a damn good custom jewelry maker and asked them to help me decide and design a bespoke ring to a certain budget...
I won't say what I spent, but it was about 3/4 of my monthly salary and I got a ring for my fiance that was worth more than any amount of money as it was unique, symbolic and every design element had some meaning to it...
You don't need to spend a fortune... Just put some thought into it.

I asked my husband and he said he would spend $400.oo today.
I have been told it should cost 3 to 6 months salary! GOOD GAWD what a joke when 65% of them will get a divorce anyway! Should of put that towards a house payment and been farther ahead! Some people never learn.
Mine was only $225.oo 23 years ago. I picked out the cheapest one I could find! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH LIFE IS GOOD !!!!

I spent 2000$ but the ring also includes the second ring given at the wedding, coincidentaly, is was about 1 month's salary!

Ok, I am not a man, but I have heard the same thing about one months salary, but to me it didn't matter. The ring I got was perfect, not because of the size,shape, or anything, but because it was given to me out of love and the promise of a future with the one I love.

I would spend as much as I could afford at the time. It isn't worth going in to debt over, though.
