"And what would you do," the Master said unto the multitude," if God spoke directly to your face and said, ' I command that you be happy in the world, as long as you live.' What would you do then?" ...
If you are not doing what makes you happiest ... why not? Really think it through. We may feel we are sacrificing, but we can also lose sight of the fact that we have chosen to sacrifice and often we sacrifice for our greater long term happiness.
Consider that you are not your body, nor your emotions, nor even your thoughts, any more than the clothes you wear. Belief in eternal life puts a mere lifetime, a single planet even, into a different perspective.
Embrace life as a friend who showers you with gifts, trust yourself to make good selections from the choices offered by your friend, life. Some choices will make you happy and other ones will help you learn.
If that doesn't work for you, consider that you may have no choice at all and that you are observing your life like someone in the audience at a cinema. How does that feel? This can help detach you from feelings of hurt.
You may not believe what is written above, but recognise that you choose your beliefs. Freedom of choice includes the freedom to choose to be unhappy. Take pleasure in the freedom.
For me, some keywords relating to happiness are
Love, give, be willing to receive, appreciate, meditate, laugh, be playful, be compassionate... live.

Hi Butterfly . Most of our unhappiness stems from sin. Envy, greed, lust, are just a few of the sins that will bring us unhappiness. God does not promise us happiness, but He does promise us peace of mind if we do his will. We are to come to Him with all of our prayers and requests and if we let His Will be done, we will have peace of mind. God assures us in Philippians 4:6-7:
"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
It seems everywhere we look it's 'sex and new shiny things' We are best when we do not fill our minds with these things. God tells us in Philippians 4:8-9 of His peace:
"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. 9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you."
