You can try both. I have been into martial arts myself around 10 years ago.... during the time when MMA was never heard off before, the time when Royce Gracie was making a name in the UFC.... a time when most martial artists practice traditional fighting.... Until Finally, Mixed Martial Arts was introduced.

MMA teaches a modern approach to fighting. It invloves using multiple skills in fighting like striking (with the fists, elbows, forehead, knees, feet etc.) and grappling techniques (joint locks, chokes, even pinning holds sometimes). The objective in mma fiughting is to gain more points againts an opponent or knock out an opponent or make an opponent tap out. Boxing is more of a traditional sport which is of course more popular and boxers earn more money from their carrer than most mma fighters do. but the good thing about it is you can focus on training in only one particular skill with this and make you a better boxer while at the same time a mixed martial artist. Boxing is the most basic in mma so you should not under estimate it. most fighter who lost to a knock out in the UFC were knocked out with punches. If you could have a seperate training for boxing, you will not need to train yourself bowing while in mma. meaning you can focus more with training with other skills while in mma since you are already training boxing somewhere else. have fun!!! martail arts and boxing are the best sports in the world!!!

boxing IS a martial art.

As for your choice for either MMA or boxing it depends on what you want to do. Boxing is dieing and the money isn't in MMA yet but it will be, likely you won't be in your fighting prime any more and won't be able to capitalize on it. boxing still has the bigger paycheck by a LONGSHOT.

If you want to fight in a cage and be an amateur or pro mma fighter you should obviously do that.

If you want to be a boxer you should do that.

If you are just trying to become a good fighter as a hobby then you should train the MMA gym.

lol the smart thing would be to go to the boxing gym... learn the "sweet science" of boxing and get your hands good.... then go to the mma gym and learn your ground game... good luck
