If you think there is one, say the God. If you want to think there is one, still say the God. If you suspect there is not, then say a God.
All science, taken as whole, tends to cast serous doubt on the existence of a God; so it is common practice in a science paper to say a God, but either way is okay.
Even the people who believe in God are not totally clear on these issues, and many of them simply hope there's a God, or wish there were a God , and leave it at that.

There is one true God, so the God as in: The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is the one true God.
If you are talking about mythology, or idolatry, then a god (unspecific) or the god (specific). The Romans on Mars Hill had many gods. Among them was a god of rain. They even had a statue to the unknown god.
