I am being serious here. I know they can be disabled or sick or just not in the mood, but the other day I sat next to an elderly man and didn't want to lose my place as there was too many people in the place. So anyways he stank so bad, that I had an asthma attack and had to use my inhaler. It's sad to say yes, I could die if there is no oxygen to the brain. Should I tell him he stinks, so I could breathe?

I'm 70 and male & I shower daily. I have also noticed younger ppl , not to up on their personal hygene. At least he may have a reason. Try not to take chances like risking your life rather than loosing your place.

That's a general question. I'm sure some don't shower everyday, but then, there are those that probably shower more than once a day. This goes for people of all ages, not just elderly. There are some very capable people that don't shower daily, for whatever reasons.

The cause of the odor can be from many causes. Unfortunately, there are some medicines with side effects that cause the body to emit bad odors, and no matter how many showers they take, they can't get rid of the odor. Don't be so quick to judge unless you know the whole story.

No of course not. Not everyone does even if they are not elderly. But you must be aware of the problems that the elderly often face. They are sometimes over conscious of 'wasting too much hot water' or 'falling down in the tub' ( most don't like showers because they did not grow up with them...they used baths-once a week) As they age, fear set in. some get in the tub and can't get out on their own. If they live alone, its a big problem. Speak to someone in their family if possible and let them know there is a problem here. Be kind. It could be you some day.

It's a shame that there are stinky people. I cannot imagine not bathing at least twice daily. But, everyone is different. Perhaps extenuating circumstances do not allow him to do so. Even if you had've told him that he smelled bad, it wouldn't have solved the problem at that time.

Truly, I don't understand why you didn't move. I would rather choose to move rather than choose to die from lack of oxygen.

I feel as if some of the elderly and the not-so-elderly, may take showers, but may not change their clothing often enough. Clothes can get reallllllly smellllly if they are worn too long. Then again, some may bathe, but not use deodorant. You were very brave not to comment to him. He probably does not know how he smells to others. Your answer is probably Not ALL elderly take daily showers!!! (Even if it was news to him that he smelled, he probably would not change.)

It's like you said. My mother -in-law is 72 and she showers everyday. Every person is different. There should be someone in their family to assist them with it.
