I currently own a 2002 Chevy Impala and I'm considering an SUV for my next car purchase. I am rather fond of the '04 Envoy XUV (with the rear retractable roof [yay!]) and want to buy one next year. I know there aren't many, but if you own one could you tell me about your experiences (pro, cons, major/minor repairs)? I look for a smooth ride, little cab noise, and I don't want my engine to sound like a MAC truck from the inside of the vehicle.

The GMC of your choice is not a bad vehicle and I would also consider buying it, if I was in the market for one. However, there are also many other great SUVs out there that can give the Envoy a run for it's money. The Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer, which comes in Mercury and Lincoln versions as well, Lexus GX 470, Acura MDX, Land Rover Discovery, Dodge Durango, Nissan Pathfinder and Mitsubishi Montero are all great options but the best way to find out is to test drive them all. My mother has a 2004 Acura MDX and it is loaded with features like GPS Navigation system, 6-disc in dash CD changer, heated front seats and countless other features. The ride is not bad and the V6 has enough power, however the noise level is a little higher than I would expect from a car of this class. Nevetheless, it is up to you to figure out which one is the best. Keep in mind, however, that if you decide to buy the Envoy XUV make sure you buy the SLT trim line since the base SLE are not very user friendly, in my opinion. There is also a 4x4 feature availabe on the Envoy. Please consider that the Chevrolet Trailblazer and the Buick Rainier is basically the same GMC with different looks. But if you buy the GMC, be informed that it has a standard V6 and an optional V8 for more refinement and power. I'd go with the V8 even though the gas mileage is not that great. As for the slideable roof, just make sure it will work all the time for you since the mechanism is new and untried. Good luck shopping.

General Motors doesn't make a vehicle that is worth the money.
Below is the report card for the GMC Envoy from Consumer Reports. Not to flattering. Also be cautious of General Motors gimmickry like the retractable roof. Chances are it will leak in just a couple of months.

Biggest issues have been engine related. As long as it is not the inline engine. I believe it is an inline 5 cylinder. Then it shouldn't have many issues. Advise a v-6 for that vehicle. A 4 cylinder just won't cut it for the weight
