People in africa have VERY rigid views about what they can eat. Most of them are based on superstition. To be blunt. The foods provided are what they are because they won't eat anything else. They will starve to death rather than eat something new. This is a BIG problem in providing food relief because the foods they insist on eating are of poor nutritional value (mostly rice and millet). Also, they won't take supplements (vitamins, protein powders etc.)
A hell of alot of food rotted away uneaten before people figured out what was going on. If the situation was different, it would be FAR better to provide them with refined, fortified foodstuffs in packaging that keeps. This would enable food to be stockpiled and allow the people to build up resources of vital nutrients (most direly needed, protein) as a hedge against starvation.
People in the western world really don't understand something about africa. Ninety percent of the battle is getting compliance. You can tell people what they need to do. Give them the resources and tools. But, that doesn't mean they will do it. This has important implications for everything from addressing hunger and poverty to trying to stop the spread of AIDS.

rice, flour, beans and such are non perishable. if they can't afford food they also don't have electricity or means to keep the meat frozen or cold. also their bodies are used to the bland eating, some food we consider wholesome or healthy their bodies probably could not tolerate. also rice and other non perishable stuff is not too expensive so they can get more of it and feed more ppl with it

I believe rice is very inexpensive and easy to grow. I guess it also expands so you get kinda full from eating it, like bread.

Not only those ads could make them feel so. Their conditions are so pathetic. I don't know whom to curse for their being so, God Almighty for such inequality or Society for its own selfish acts or the parents of those children who left them in such a state. Really really, i feel so sad as you said to have felt..:-(
