Excellent question for google:

"The Army has a very different function than the Marines, and a wider mission during wartime.

The first difference is between the missions of the respective forces. The Marines are a relatively small branch of the Navy. Their mission as I understand it is primarily to conduct initial combat operations from a forward deployed platform (such as a big *** boat) and establish a beachhead from which they can operate until follow on forces arrive. I am not a Marine so if I make any mistakes here, someone let me know.

The Army’s mission is a little bigger. Along with establishing a foothold, they also expand the foothold into entire theaters of operations. The Marines fight battles. The Army fights the war.

The Marines are not really a self sustaining force. They take the beach (or whatever) and hold it until support arrives. It might sound like this is a bad thing, but in reality this is part of what makes them such a proud and ***-kicking force. There is a lot of pride in knowing that you are at the tip of the spear."

The army is much better equipped, larger, and has significantly superior logistics. They also have better Special Operations units, better and exponentially larger armor and aviation assets, and rely on the Air Force for fighter support. The marines can deploy faster, use older but more easily maintained equipment, and pride themselves in "making do," which is mostly a morale booster to overshadow shitty logistics. However, they do have their own jet fighters. Training in basic is almost the same. Their daily PT is the same, the only true difference is the PT test at the end. The army has a stronger focus on strength while the marines are more about endurance. Makes sense because the Army utilizes a lot more of, and heavier field equipment than the Marines, who focus more on mobility and simplicity. The Marine training is longer because they train all of their recruits as riflemen before anything else, while the Army instead has a longer Infantry training to make up for this, and to speed up training of non-combat personnel that don't need the additional training. In joint combat units, the army generally pulls more of the heavy weight and firepower, at least in Afghanistan. Also, branch barriers pretty much disappear unless somebody ***** up really bad- all servicemen are brothers and sisters in arms. Another major difference in terms of organization are the divisions. While the Army has divisions that specialize in things (ie: 101st Airborne/Air Assault, 10th Mountain, 1st Cavalry), the Marine divisions are more universal. Marines: Jack of All trades, but a master of none. Army: Total Ground Combat Dominance. Reality Check: After basic training, and excluding infantry training (which is about a week longer in the army), and excluding training involving equipment that is specific to their respective service branch, they attend the exact same training. Random Fact: The US Army possesses more Humvees than the Marine Corps has in personnel.

While, yes the Corps has many naval traditions and serves aboard ships (and our pay checks say Dept of the Navy)
The Marine corps typical unitizes itself for battle in MAGTFs Marine, Air, Ground Task Force.
The Corps does Amphibious, Helo and ground assault. In fact I will FN guarantee you that you will hump a ton more in the Corps than in the Army.
Like the Army, the Corps has Helicopters tanks, and light assault vehicles, artillery, and weapons companies, Motor-t, Supply, Cooks, Radar units, Language, Intel crypto etc. But, unlike the Army the corps has routine use of Navy ships, landing craft, We also have fixed wing jets both regular and vertical take off for supplying our own close air support.

The Corps is so very different and soooo much more hard core. It is FN intense.
Put it this way, If you can't decide then join the Army then after your hitch join the Corps. You'll have to do boot camp again, but if you joined the Corps 1st then you wouldn't have to go thru Army basic..

The army and airforce work together, the marines and navy work together. The marines do physically and mentally retrain a person, but the mental retraining is much more...how do I put it...more brainwashing. They are the first to go, the first to see the enemy and the first to get shot at. they expect soldiers who will do as they are told to do. (they also do not have as good accomidation as the other services).

The Marines has its own Air Force. The Army can't carry troops or supplies for long distances because they rely solely on helicopters for air power. The Marines have jet fighters so they have their own air support in battle. The Army depends on the Air Force for long distance transport and supply.

Although the Marines are a much smaller force, they have air support and supply integrated into a single unit. This allows a single commander to control his entire structure and makes the Marines more streamlined so they can react quickly. The Marines have a reputation for having the toughest training and are the best fighting force in the world.

As a former Marine, allow me to tell you that the Corps is actually the Dept. of the Navy. We were form out of the Navy so we keep the anchor on our emblem. Since we kicked but on earth as well as sea we have the globe. Last but not least we are as deadly in the skies so we sport an eagle. Our emblem is the eagle, globe and anchor, symbolizing air, land, and sea. We are the first into the war, and the last to come home. The Army is a hard bunch of men and women, but the Marine Corps are a group of men and women with that extra ton of gung ho stomp a mud hole in ya bit of ferocity that isn't home grown. but is cultivated in our boot camp. Semper Fidelis Devil Dawgs!
