Don't try and do strict training with a bird that's been traumatized..
Just work on making it feel happy, loved and SECURE.. if its not friendly towards people, just sit with your hand in its cage (a little at a time) and not moving it, just so it gets use to the idea that your a friend not foe.. Make sure he has lots of fresh vegetables to nibble on and also fresh seed, pellets and water daily.. Make sure you stick to a routine doing these things so then he will get to know what to expect next and wont fret as much.. You will need to work hard to gain his trust, so don't do anything that will jepodise this -loud noises and sudden movements for example..
GOOD LUCK and KEEP IT SIMPLE =)

So you're going to babysit an abused parakeet right? Why do you need to train it?
but anyways, here's what I know. the bird will be very stressed out (watery poops would be normal) because it's in a new enviornment with different people, so try to keep the same food that it's been eating and the same cage and same toys so at least something is the same. At first, to force it to do anything (like come out of the cage or socializing) and just let it do what it wants too. i find that it helps if you sit by the cage and read out loud to it, to help it get used to you. you can also cover half of the cage with a blanket, so that it's like a little place to hide out. If it has been abused before, he/she will probably be extra jumpy, so try to keep the area that it's being kept, clean and stress free and quiet. don't make any sudden movements etc. You can leave on some quiet, slow music or something. what kind of training do you want to do? finger training (let it step up), talking, tricks? I think it would be best to leave the bird be because she/he will be in this new, strange enviornment. it's best to just let her/him get used to this new place and new people (you!) before you take him/her out and try to train it. hope this helps! good luck!

Well if you are just babysitting the bird then it isnt your place to train their bird to do anything. Don't make it so important to you that the bird has to be hand tamed, because reguardless of the birds history, it has already made up it's own mind to remain wild. Therefore simply leave the bird alone. Place food and water in with it and leave it alone and watch it. Watch what it's personality is like, how it plays and listen to it's song. Learn to Love the bird for WHO the bird is just like you yourself want to be loved for who you are. Learn to enjoy WATCHING IT and LISTENING ti it's song and watch it like it's on TV and enjoy it. It will love YOU better if you show it this respect and you will notice it will like you better as you stand on the outside looking in loveing it back. Talking to it, whistleing to it, and it will learn you are safe to be around. You have to remember the bird has to learn to trust you and the slower you go about doing it the faster it will be the bird you wanted it to be in the first place. But again it has made up it's mind to remain wild so enjoy it like its a live TV show living in your home for a while. It is in a new place being in your home, with you being the stranger, it needs time to get used to the place and you. Good luck!
