it depends on whether the word is masculine or feminine. If it ends in an "o" it is generally masculine and then the is "el." If it ends in an "a" is is generally feminine and then the is "la". Plural masculine is Los; plural feminine Las. Hope that helps.

It's either "el" or "la" depending on the gender of the noun you are referring to; eg - la chica = the girl, el chico = the boy, la mesa = the table, el arbol = the tree etc etc

it is both EL and LA ... that depends on the thing you are referring about. Of course, you have to know the spanish word for what you are referring to ... like example .... EL PERRO (the dog), or EL GATO (the cat)....... LA COMPUTADORA (the computer), or LA CAMA (the bed).

in english, we have 1 definite article: THE. we can say, "the house" or "the houses", and not worry about number and gender, right? well in spanish, everything has a gender, and singular vs. plural counts, so if you wanted to say, "the house", you would say, "la casa" and if you wanted to say, "the houses" you would say, "las casas"...and if you wanted to say "the book", you would say, "el libro" and if you wanted to say, "the books", you would say, "los libros"...get it?

the articles are: *EL-singular masculine (usually end in 'o')
*LA-singular feminine (usually end in 'a')
*LOS-plural masculine (usually just add an 's' or 'es')
*LAS-plural feminine (same)
