3 men, go into a hotel, they get a room, bell boy tells them it costs $30. bell boy runs to give the money to his manager. the manager tells him that today is $5 off. bell boy brings the $5 back to the men, $1 to each men, bell boy keeps $2 tip. in actuality each men paid $9, so 9, 18, $27. the bell boy has $2, 27, $29. where did the missing dollar go. I doubt that there will be any logical explanations. I know that no money was stolen. I got this riddle from a sub.

The bellboy has $2. The Manager has $25. The men have $3. It adds up to $30.
Your $27 already includes the $2 that the bellboy has. You are adding that twice, and not counting the money the men have.
Thanks for adding to my list.

If you think about it, it sort of makes sense. If you take two dollars for the bell boy from the $30 before hand, you have $28 then take $3, you have $25 so there is an extra dollar that is kept. So really, two people laid $9 for the hotel and $1 for the tip, and one person paid $10 for the hotel.
If he gave the 3 men the money back first, there would be $27. In the $27, there is the tip for the bell boy so when you take $2 out, there is $25 which is what is left for the hotel stay.

The answer to this riddle is simple. There is no missing dollar. Mathematically you can account for the whole $30
Room was $30 - $5 discount = $25
Bellboy gets $5 change to return to the men keeping $2 for a tip
The men got the difference $3
$25 + $3 +$2 = $30 = No missing money
The part about them sharing equally in the cost of the room is the part of this word problem that is irrelevant information. This is the information that is added to complicate a non complicated issue. For example, If 3 boys bought a comic book for $18 why would you naturally assume each boy contributed equally to the purchase. In fact, it doesn't matter who paid what and how much. The story states a room was purchased for $30 and the hotel returned $5 to the men. The men gave the bellboy $2 for his trouble. That is the only important part of the story. The hotel got only what they were owed. The men paid only what was required and the bellboy didn't steal anything extra.

The manager has $25. The bellboy had $2 and each of the three men got $1 back. $25+$2+$3= $30

in actuality the men paid 28 altogether. That's 9 for two guys and 10 for one guy with the $2 tip. 9+9+10+2=30.
So one guy had to pay an extra dollar

$30 -$5 (refund) = $25.00 /3 men = 2 men paying $8.33 and 1 man paying $8.34. then give each man $1.00 back. so 2 men actually got $9.33 and 1 got $9.34 for a total of $28.00 +$2.00 (tip) = $30.00.
The $30.00 and the $5.00 was never actually divided into 3 equal parts, so there was never actually a missing dollar.
