Businesses need to be able to guarantee a certain amount of dollars in sales for every square foot of floorspace in a store. Many small "owner operated" liquor stores are occupying exactly as much space as the owner can afford or feels he needs.

There are large "chain" operations in most big cities that are as large as a small grocery store. Because people come from all over the city, they require more space to serve their customers, and the increased sales pays the increased overhead.

Operations like that depend on volume to spread their higher costs over more sales transactions. Its the same reason WalMarts are so big.

In California there are two great places to go for selection...The Liquor Barn and A-Z Liquors. Personally, I prefer the small liquor stores because I spend less money....lol
