Idea came from Roman mythology which was very popular around the time.

They had to make Mary a virgin so that Jesus wouldn’t carry the sin from Adam (they believed sin was passed down in the “seed” [sperm]). Obviously they didn’t know anything about genetics.

whilst i became born, ought to my father have asked for a DNA attempt to tutor that i'm his valid son? No. Neither did I call for the comparable whilst my young ones have been born. comparable is the case with Joseph. Jesus must be from a virgin start - little doubt. on the comparable time he must be of the lineage of David. If Joseph fathers Jesus the 1st prophesy is violated. If Jesus is born in a virgin start and Joseph accepts it, then he's a valid newborn of David. Joseph customary Jesus, and there ends the project!

Mary was unwed...she was simply "betrothed" to Joseph, and tradition holds that she and Joseph never had sexual knowledge of each other, at least before the birth of Jesus. The bible says "with Mary his espoused wife", the term "espoused" means "promised". They had not undergone the Jewish ritual of marriage at the time of Jesus' birth. In fact, no where in the bible or even tradition does it state of Mary and Joseph were ever "married" in any sort of religious ceremony, although it is assumed they did at some point. Remember that there is nothing told about Jesus from the time of the return from Egypt until he was 12, and from then until he was about 30. That's a large gap in time that we will never know what happened.

She was not married at the time. She was to be married to Joseph. Read Matthew 1:18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.

At this time, an unwed pregnant woman could be stoned by her promised, who was Joseph. We don't know if Joseph was even considering this, but the Bible assures us that an angel appeared to him and explained Mary's pregnancy. Jesus also had two sisters, Lydia and Assisa, and his half brothers , James, John, and Judas. So, we know the marriage of Mary and Joseph went forth after the birth of Jesus.

At the time the angel visits Mary, she is not married to Jospeh. The birth of Jesus is from immaculate conception-- a miracle. Joseph and Mary were not together as husband and wife until after Jesus was born. We know they did concimate the marriage because Jesus has half brothers. Joseph choose to marry Mary even though she was pregnant and it wasnt his child. He was destined to marry her.

They were promised to each other - engaged. The marriage had not been consumated. An angel came to Mary and an angel came to Joseph. Both of the betrothed knew what was going on.
A betrothal went on for one year before the wife went into her husband's house and they consumated the marriage.

If an angel were to visit you, you would definitely know something was going on. Read Matthew 1:18-21 in the Bible for the whole story of what you are asking.

I believe they were betrothed.

EDIT: Mat 1:18 ¶ Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Mat 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just [man], and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily
So they were engaged, she got pregnant, then they got married. Then he found out she was preg and was going to give her up. Makes you wonder?

She wasnt married yet, she was "Betrowthed" which basically means engaged. The Angel told Joseph not to have consumate the marriage until after she gave birth to Jesus.

Notice the Bible says that before Mary and Joseph "came together" she was found with a child of the Holy Ghost. You need to understand the Jewish Traditions of Court-ship, especially 1st Century Jewish customs.
